Restaurants in San Miguel
(Sort Of): Salads to Go

A Home Delivery Option that's
Good for You...
and Just Plain Good

"Salads to Go" is temporarily closed. Christiana tells us they will reopen soon with a "Winter Menu." we'll keep you informed when that happens. We hope it's soon!

T here are only a few restaurants in San Miguel de Allende that do really great salads—Hecho en Mexico and El Buen Cafe come to mind. But now there's a wonderful new alternative for salad fans.

While not exactly a San Miguel "restaurant," my new favorite salad solution in San Miguel is Salads to Go. Salads is all they do (well, except for some killer cheesecake) and home delivery is the only way to get it. In just a few months in business, this new home delivery service has taken off, and no wonder. The salads are superb.

The "menu" is really more of a laundry list of ingredients from which you can pick and chose, and they then compose your salad to order and bring it to your door. Everything is perfectly fresh, disinfected and scrupulously handled.

Here's how it works: when you've got a case of the rabbit munchies, you call Salads to Go. If you don't have a menu, no problem. Co-owners Christiana and Amailia will gladly read it to you over the phone, in English. (When your salad is delivered, they'll include a menu for next time.)

Salads to Go Menu, San Miguel de AllendeYou choose your base: romaine, Italian lettuce, spinach or a combination of all three. You then choose twelve ingredients from a list of 30 choices, including all the main expected salad veggies, plus goodies like gorgonzola cheese, fresh parmesan, cranberries, olives (green or black), egg, avocado, corn, sunflower seeds and more. Next you choose your protein: beef or chicken fajitas, tuna or turkey ham. For a small extra fee, you can opt for shrimp, salmon or tofu. Finally, pick your carb topping—pasta, beans or chickpeas—and your fresh, homemade dressing.

Too Many Choices...

My personal fave? Spinach with shrimp, almonds, gorgonzola, cranberries, sunflower seeds, sesame seeds, black olives, red onion, avocado, and a bunch of other stuff. Or wait, maybe it's the romaine with chicken fajitas, parmesan, mushrooms, jicama, egg, corn, green olives, alfalfa sprouts, walnuts and some other stuff. But then I also like Italian lettuce with tuna, arugula, broccoli, cukes, carrots, tomatoes, bell peppers, sprouts, red cabbage and.... Oh well, you get the idea. Salads to Go can accommodate whatever food mood you happen to be in.

This is not just a salad; it's a meal, and a substantial one at that. And the price is definitely right. A "medium" salad costs $49 pesos and is HUGE. Plan to put some in the fridge for later. The "large" salad, at $63 pesos will feed two people easily. One friend of mine who lives alone orders one large salad every three days or so, leaving off those ingredients that don't hold well in the fridge, like avocado and eggs. Once delivered, she divides the salad into three portions, dresses one with avocado and whatever else she likes and puts the rest away. Presto, three lunches for about six bucks.

Insiders' Tip: If you're like me, you'll want to create a little more "balanced" meal, so you'll add a piece of one of the best cheesecakes you've ever tasted. The only problem is deciding between the chocolate cheesecake or the fruit-of-the-day type. $22 pesos per piece. Creamy, rich and totally YUM!

Salads to Go delivers every day except Sunday, until 5 pm. Your salad will arrive at your door in record time.

This place provides a healthy, creative and delicious option to going out to one of the restaurants in San Miguel. Eat in, eat easy, eat well, eat cheap... and be good to your body!
